Diversity Interview Paper# 1
Instructions:
Diversity is all around us, but how do one act when interacting with a person from a diverse background? For this assignment you will pick a person to interview from a different race, gender, cultural etc. while using the guided questions from Hays (2016) ADDRESSING framework worksheet. The person cannot be someone you already know. After the interview is completed you are going to write a 5-page paper of the interview and connecting the assignment to Hays (2016). The paper should include, how you felt conducting the interview, citations from Hays (2016) chapters connecting to the interview, and the individual interview.
The purpose of this paper is to help you get an understanding of how to use the ADDRESSING framework to identify the person and their cultural background. It will also help you to understand yourself based on the unknown biases, stereotyping, prejudice etc. to work on within yourself. Please do not put the interviewee name in the paper. You are to follow the confidentiality rules for this paper. Here are a couple questions to keep in mind regarding how you felt conducting the interview:
1. How did you feel interviewing the interviewee?
2. Was there anything that made you feel uncomfortable while talking to the interviewee?
3. Were there any unknown biases to arise?
4. What was your reaction to the person when you first met?
Paper Format:
The written assignment must be completed according to APA guidelines. The APA Publication Manual (7th ed.). If you are unsure of how the paper should be written, please use the English lab at the City Campus on the 3rd floor 360. You can also find handouts in the Resource tab in Blackboard ©. The paper should be double-spaced, 12-font, Times New Roman, and 1-in margin all around. The Title should include the name of the assignment, the author name, Course #, SUNY Erie, and page number. Please be advised that the Title page, Abstract, and reference pages are not counted for the 5-pages of the written work.
DOCUMENT TAXONOMY: When you save your assignment document, please “name” the file of your assignment as follows: “Last name and assignment name”. For instance, if I were submitting Assignment #1 Diversity Paper 1: Addressing framework, I would name my file “HughesJonesDP1AF.doc” or “HughesJones#1Addressingframework.doc” – that’s it! Use that name when you save the file on your computer and again when you send it to me via the Bb Drop Box; please no exceptions (this is how I file your assignments – alphabetically by student last name)! Points will be deducted if you fail to use the format of last name and assignment name.
Submission:
The assignment is to be submitted on Blackboard© drop box. The drop box will be visible on March 7th, 2022, at 8 AM. The Diversity Paper 1 Due: Monday, March 14, 2022, at 11:59 PM and is worth 100 points (please see the grading rubric on the syllabus). Late assignments will not be accepted!!!!!
ADDRESSING Framework Worksheet
Interviewee Cultural Sketch.
Age and generational influences: When were you born (e.g. date of birth)? When you were born, what were the social expectations for a person of your identity? Do you identify with a particular generation (e.g. baby boomers, Gen X or Y, a second-generation immigrant, etc.)? How have your values and worldview been shaped by the social movements of or influences on your generation (e.g. the Great Depression, World War II, the Vietnam War, women’s movement, Stonewall, Americans with Disabilities Act, civil 3 rights movement, social media, an economic downturn, political events in another country)?
Developmental or other Disability: Do you identify as someone living with a visible disability, or a nonvisible disability (e.g. chronic pain, psychiatric or learning disability)? If no, has your personal or professional life been affected by others with disabilities (e.g. friend, family member, partner, or coworker with a disability)? How has disability status — either your own disability or that of someone else in your life — affected your life and opportunities?
Religion & spirituality: Were you brought up in a religious or spiritual tradition? Do you identify with a religion or have a spiritual practice now? How were your values and goals shaped by your religious or non-religious upbringing?
Ethnic & racial identity: What do you consider your ethnic or racial identity? If you were adopted, what are the identities of your biological and adoptive parents? How do other people identify you? Are these the same? Are there ethnic or racial differences within your family?
Socioeconomic status: What social class did you grow up in, and what do you consider your socioeconomic status now? When you were in high school, what were the educational and work opportunities available to you?
Sexual orientation: Do you identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or heterosexual? If you are heterosexual, do you have a family member or friend who is gay? Is your family accepting of a gay member?
Indigenous heritage: Do you belong to a Native tribe or nation, for example, Native Hawaiian, First Nations, Alaska Native, or American Indian? Did you grow up on or near a reservation or Native community? Do you seek to connect or reconnect with your Native community?
National origin: Are you a U.S. citizen, an international student, or an immigrant? Were you born in the U.S.? Do you (and your parents and grandparents) speak English as a first language? How has your nationality affected your life and opportunities?
Gender: What were and are the gender-related roles and expectations for you in your family of origin and current family, in your work setting, and in relation to your other cultural identities? How have these expectations affected your choices in life?
