Darlene is a sixteen-year-old Caucasian girl who is the adopted and only child of an intact family. She lives in a middle-class suburb that her parents chose specifically because of the school system’s reputation for excellent education and a high college acceptance rate. Mom and Dad are both educated and professional people. Darlene has no interest in school, breaks every rule she possibly can, and has done so since eighth grade. The principal of her junior high almost didn’t pass her because of excessive detentions and low grades. Darlene is in counseling because she was arrested for shoplifting and her probation requires counseling. When you meet Darlene, she admit​‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍​s to smoking cigarettes and sneaking alcohol regularly from her parents’ extensive liquor cabinet. She has used marijuana and is considering trying ecstasy and sniffing glue. Her first sexual experience was at fifteen when her parents took her on vacation. She sneaked out of the cabin when they were asleep. A “thirty-something” –year old man bought her alcohol in exchange for sex. She doesn’t want to talk about it, but says she is sure he thought she was twenty-one because that is what she told him. Darlene dislikes school has mostly Cs and Ds and has no desire to go to college. She is almost always in trouble for truancy or falling asleep in class. In freshman year, her class went on a field trip to a local drug rehabilitation center to deter drug use. Darlene thought it was “cool” and that it would not be so bad if she had to go there one day.
