Cancer Pa)ent Case Project

Purpose: Radia/on therapists are greatly involved in pa/ent’s cancer treatment and at /mes,
play a very ac/ve role in the pa/ent’s mental and psychological journey as well. As you grow
into your role as a radia/on therapy student, rela/onships will develop, and communica/on will
get easier. Even this early on in your clinical career, there will be pa/ents that s/ck out to you.
This project involves describing a specific cancer pa/ent’s case/treatment that you have
observed during your clinical rota/ons. There is no limit or restric/on on whom you will choose,
but pick a pa/ent that you either learned a great deal from, connected with built a strong
rela/onship, overcame difficulty, had a unique setup or diagnosis, or someone who found a
special place in your heart. This reflec/on at the end of the semester will help you grow
professionally and personally into more of a well-rounded therapy student, ready to advance
into the next clinical prac/cum in RAON-J351.
Skills: This assignment supports your early communica/on efforts with pa/ents and gives
students that gentle push to start formula/ng founda/onal rela/onship skills that will make you
become a successful radia/on therapist in the years to come.
Knowledge: Students will gain tremendous understanding of how to look in pa/ent’s charts,
understand the consult note, analyze the radia/on prescrip/on, reflect on what they learned
from the pa/ent, and allow them to begin contempla/ng the posi/ve impact they have in the
life of a cancer pa/ent. These skills are founda/onal pieces and groundwork that will con/nue
to grow as students’ progress in the program and through their professional careers.
Task: To complete this assignment successfully, students:
Within your project, you must analyze & describe the following:
1. Your interac/on with the pa/ent: iden/fy the radia/on oncology department and the
specific rota/on you were assigned along with the skills that you performed.
2. Why did you choose this par/cular pa/ent?
3. Pa/ent presenta/on: iden/fy the pathologic type of cancer, age of the pa/ent, and the
stage of the disease
4. Describe the treatment prescrip/on to include – machine used, beam energy, fields
treated, dose prescribed per daily frac/on and total dose
5. Iden/fy the radia/on protec/on guidelines followed during the pa/ent’s treatment
procedure. (for the pa/ent and for you as a student/staff therapist)
6. Describe your role in the care of the pa/ent, what you learned from caring for the
pa/ent and the supervising staff.
7. How will this specific pa/ent help you in the months to come?
The project must be typed, a minimum of two pages, and 1 ½ spaced, legible and professional
font, size 10-13.
Students must: contain a cover page of assignment with the following:
Student’s name, due date, name of assignment, course/class name and number,
instructor’s name.
Points will be reduced for misspelling and/or poor grammar. Assignment is due by Dec. 7, 2020
by 11:59 p.m. Late assignments will not be graded.
