British Colonization

Write a 4-5 page essay, addressing the following two aspects:
(1) On the basis of class material, discuss two major similarities between the legacies of British colonization of Ireland and European colonization of Rwanda (approximately 3 pages). Provide specific examples from the course material, and cite every sentence where you reference a source (reading, documentary or video lecture).

(2) Some claim that colonization had “positive aspects,” or that former king Leopold II of Belgium was not responsible for atrocities, “because he never went to Congo” (see https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-53017188). The latter BBC article starts with the following:
Inside the palatial walls of Belgium’s Africa Museum stand statues of Leopold II – each one a monument to the king whose rule killed as many as 10 million Africans. Standing close by, one visitor said, “I didn’t know anything about Leopold II…”
Many Europeans are not taught about the atrocities committed by colonizers. Do you believe that more knowledge about the effects of colonization would have positive outcomes for the relations between former colonizers and the countries who were formerly colonized? Justify your answer (approximately 1 page).

You are required to incorporate material from course lectures, at least two assigned readings, and at least two assigned documentaries.

Note: You are not allowed to incorporate material from sources not provided in class, i.e. you are required to provide analysis only on the basis of the given data. Remember that the most important parameters of grading your essay will be your ability to show your understanding of the course material.
Requirements:
a. The paper should be 4-5 pages in length, Times New Roman font, size 12, double-spaced, with 1-inch margins.
b. Thesis statement should include a summary of your argument, and its justification.
– “In this paper I will argue that the two major similarities between the legacies of British colonization of Ireland and European colonization of Rwanda are… I believe that that knowledge about the effects of colonization might have positive/negative outcomes for the relations between former colonizers and the countries who were formerly colonized because…”
c. Do not provide long quotes. Rather, paraphrase the authors’ arguments (and cite them).
d. You have to provide in-text citations in either APA or MLA citation format. EVERY sentence in which you reference an idea from a source should have a citation – make sure to include page numbers for the reading material, timestamps for documentaries and date for lectures in your citations. Failure to cite properly will result in a significant loss of points. Uncited work is plagiarism (and will be addressed accordingly).
