Biological Anthropology

Term Paper 1: Biological Anthropology: Online Learning (Due November 13th, by 11:59pm, via turn it in link, located on blackboard).

For this paper, you are required to do the following:

1.     Type a three to four paged double-spaced response to one of the questions posted below. Please aim for a minimum of 3 pages, not including a title or references page . Times New Roman font, 12 pt, one inch margins only!

2.     Incorporate two peer-reviewed articles into your response. You must cite in-text, in American Psychological Association format (APA). Here is a link to show you how to format in APA, if you have never done so: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/ . Peer-reviewed articles are only found in Academic Journals. If you were a member of the general public who was not attending college, you would need to pay for these articles. However, since you are a Saddleback College student, you have full access to these via the Library website. Here are the steps to find a peer-reviewed source:

a.     Go to the Saddleback Library website which you can access via the main homepage

b.     In the middle of the page, you will see a navigation tablet entitled “Research Tools”

c.     Click on “Find articles in Database”

d.     Enter keywords that would help you find two peer-reviewed articles

NOTE: If you should need assistance, please contact the Reference Desk via this number:  (949) 582-4525 or you can email them via “Live Chat” when the library is open during business hours.

3.     Your paper must include two headlines: Introduction and Conclusion. The introduction section will be designed to acquaint the reader (me, your instructor) with the topic at hand. In this section, you may start by describing and defining key terms, species names, etc. Your introduction should have a plentiful amount of in-text citations, ESPECIALLY from the peer-reviewed articles you chose. In the conclusion, you should provide a comprehensive analysis of the question asked. Was there anything that particularly surprised you about the topic, once you researched it?

4.     Finally, cite the article both in text and at the next page of your document (References/Works Cited)

REMEMBER: Never use material from another source, via quote or paraphrase, that you are not willing to cite. Not citing a source is considered plagiarism!

Please select and respond to only ONE of the following two questions:

1.     What are the commonalities in Life History between non-human and human primates? What are the main differences? Delayed maturation provides us deeper insight into the learning curve of primates. How does extended learning relate to slow reproduction? In terms of slow reproduction, how does this make great ape conservation even more problematic for anthropologists and biologists?

2.     Why is the relationship between sickle-cell and malaria considered a “classic” example of natural selection? How is the sickle cell gene considered a “selective advantage” in areas endemic with malaria? Is this a perfect solution to those who are heterozygous and homozygous recessive for sickle-cell? Why or why not?
