Assignment Two: Background and Determinants Analysis
OVERVIEW
The purpose of D&S Part Two is for you to provide your client with a current situation analysis and identification of key determinants of the health problem. You will use the 4-level Social Ecological Model to structure your determinants analysis. You will examine determinants, to the greatest degree possible, at each level of the SEM: the individual, interpersonal, community, and societal/structural levels. That is, what influences individual, community, and population health so that this particular health problem warrants our attention? Your paper should be based on the literature.
Please note that it is understood that evidence may be limited for your specific context and population. If you cannot find support in the literature that is directly related to your country/region and population, you can extrapolate from studies that have been done in other places, though be sure to keep potential cultural and socio-economic differences in mind.
Please see below for the paper specifications. For this assignment there is no need for a cover page, but please include key information on the top of the first page (or in the header).
Part Two will provide the foundation for Part Three in which you identify and critique prevention activities and make a recommendation.
ORGANIZATION OF PART TWO. This paper will be no more than 5 pages in length (References are not included in page count). Please use section headers (bold) to help organize your paper.
A. Introduction (~ 1 paragraph)
• Briefly introduce the topic and target population, and make a clear statement of the purpose of the paper.
B. Background (~1 – 1.5 pages). Describe what is known about your Public Health issue and Target Population (supported with current data). This section should include:
• Information on how the problem is defined and measured
• Key statistics reflecting the magnitude of the problem (incidence, prevalence) overall and in target population
C. Social Ecological Analysis of determinant (~ 2 – 2.5 pages). Each level in the social ecological model can be thought of as a level of influence. Please use and cite recent information to identify determinants (social, contextual, and/or environmental factors) that may put your target population at higher risk.

D. Brief conclusion (~ 1 paragraph ).Write a brief and succinct summary of what you have covered in the paper.

F. Specifications for deliverables:
• Submit each Part by uploading a Microsoft Word file (.doc; do not submit .pdfs) to the appropriate Blackboard Assignment folder before class.
• Name the document YourLastName Topic Ass#.doc (e.g., Smith Asthma Ass 2.doc). Please put your name and title on the top of the first page of the paper (or in the header). No need for a cover page.
• Please use 11 or 12 font size Arial, Garamond, Georgia, Helvetica, Times New Roman or Verdana
• Set 0.5 to 1-inch margins
• Use 1.5 or double spacing
• Number all pages.
