Child Observation and Reflection

Points: 30 points

Students will observe a child whom they know between 2 and 7 years old in a natural setting and write a detailed and objective narrative record of what the child did and said during the observation. This narrative will be used to reflect upon the child’s socio-cultural background, strengths, and interests.

 

Assignment must be typed, double spaced, one inch margins, and 12 size font.

 

Observation: 10 points

· Observe a child between 2-7 years old of age in a natural setting for at least 30 minutes. Make sure the child is active during your observation and gather enough information to be able to answer the reflective questions from our textbook chapter.

· Briefly describe the child, his/her age, physical characteristics, personality, and you relationship with the child (2 points)

· Write a detailed and objective account of what the child did and said during your observation. Add enough details to give the reader a clear and rich account of your observation and if possible quote the child. (1-2 paragraphs) (5 points).

· Take a photo of the child while involved in the experience and paste or attach photo to your paper. (3 points)

Use your observation to write a detailed response to each of the following questions:

IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure to avoid biased answers and only use information from your observation. The instructor will also use your observation as a framework to understand your interpretation. Answers that reflect a biased analysis based on prior knowledge of the child and family will not qualify for credit.

· What details stand out that I can make visible for further consideration?

· What in my background and values is influencing my response to this situation and why?

· How issues of culture, family background, institutionalized bias, or popular media might be influencing this situation?

· Where do I see examples of children’s strength and competency?

· How do I understand the children’s point of view in this situation?

· What is the child drawn to and excited about?

· How are the environment and materials impacting what’s unfolding and what changes could be made?

· How are the adults impacting the situation?

· What learning domains are being address and what other domains could I address?

· What theoretical perspectives and child development principles could inform my understanding and actions?

· What values, philosophy, and goals do I want to influence my response?

· What did you learn by observing the child and critically thinking about your observation? Write one paragraph to summarize your learning.

Reminder

Assignments are due on time and will be submitted at the beginning of our session. One point will be deducted for every day an assignment is late; up to one week. Assignments received after one week will only receive half credit and will not be accepted after two weeks.

Late and incomplete assignments do not qualify for revisions.
