This week, you’ll be completing four homework assignments:
1. Read Let’s Talk: A Pocket Rhetoric, Chapters 14-16 (242-276)
2. Use the Brainstorm Worksheet to generate 5-10 research keywords, a tentative research topic and one or two research questions. Please download the worksheet, fill it, and submit it here, on Thursday noon, Apr 7. Grace-period applies.
3. Watch the library video tutorials, and complete the interactive tutorials on how to evaluate sources and conduct research using the ARCC library. Then, put your keywords into ProQuest and Academic Search Premier to start your research. (See the “ARCC Library Guide” document for details.)
4. Watch my quick Library OneSearch Tutorial video. OneSearch typically pulls information from a variety of databases, so it is great for brainstorming and generating research questions. (In contrast, the searches through databases like JSTOR and EBSCO are more refined and specific to the disciplines of the Arts and Humanities, and they offer additional search functions unique to each database.) In this video, I demonstrate how to do a quick search using the title of a text. From there, I show you how to narrow down to a couple of related peer-reviewed articles, how to generate and refine your own keywords from those sources, and how to quickly retrieve the bibliographic information of library sources in MLA style.
