Write a reflection piece. Acquiring, handling, and processing non-print items in the library collection, and:
Dealing with the “Weeding” of library collections — OR, as we now say, the “De-selecting” of items in a library collection. (Heck, you can also just say “Withdrawals” in library collections.)
Whatever one may call this process, it is both quite ornery and quite necessary. Your essay piece here can discuss any of the following angles:
• What forms of items today constitute the amorphous “non-print” collection?
• Do you think libraries should or should not de-emphasize the amount of print materials in their collections? Or is that pretty much a moot point nowadays anyway?
• How has off-site storage impacted the role of collection management in libraries?
• What challenges are libraries facing with respect to replacing print collections with electronic ones?
• What political factors come into play when decide what to keep and what to — well, get rid of?
