Each essay should be a minimum of 300 words; this length
requirement is to give you a sense of the minimum level of detail expected in your writing. Essays should not exceed 500 words. Essays should demonstrate
that you understand the information well enough to explain your ideas in your own words, can draw from multiple course sources to support your ideas, and
provide original examples where appropriate. Plan to use course sources, exclusively, to complete this assignment and to cite your sources/attach a works
cited page using the APA
format. Note that you are expected to include information from at least two course sources in each essay.
In How to Deconstruct Racism, One Headline at a Time, Baratunde Thurston states: “This word game
reminded me that there is a structure to white supremacy, as there is to misogyny, as there is to all
systemic abuses of power. Structure is what makes them systemic. I’m asking people here to see the
structure, where the power is in it, and even more importantly, to see the humanity of those of us made
targets by this structure.” This is the lesson at the core of our work over the past few weeks, and the
focus of Exam #2. Before you begin, check out this writing expectations recap.
Answer each of the following four questions:
1. In LU5 we learned about four different forms of racism: individual racism, interpersonal racism,
institutional racism, and structural racism. Compare and contrast the racism that occurs at the micro level of society (individual and interpersonal racism)
with the racism that occurs at the macro-level
of society (institutional and structural racism). How are the ramifications of micro-level racism
different than the ramifications of macro-level racism?
2. Using course materials from LU6, including “The House We Live In” (Part 3 of the documentary
“Race: The Power of an Illusion,” describe two examples of structural discrimination in the United
States. Discuss how discrimination has been built into the structures of American society. We
learned that to understand racial and ethnic inequality in the United States today, we MUST consider
total discrimination. Explain why.
3. In LU7 we learned that privilege is the flip side of structural discrimination. By acknowledging
privilege we acknowledge that social systems create different realities for different groups. Discuss
three examples of white privilege. Do people who experience privilege typically consider their
experiences to be privileged? Why or why not?
4. Conclude your paper with a reflection: apply this information to your personal experiences, your
career (present or future), and/or the world around you. Using multiple course sources, share
something that we learned that will stick with you. Why do you think this information is important?
