The Purpose Statement
Once the problem statement has been drafted, a related purpose statement should be developed. The statement of the problem and purpose of the study are
related both in content and wording, yet different as the problem statement focuses solely on the identified problem, crises, or issue, while the purpose
statement addresses the intent of the study. Students often mistakenly focus on the problem when developing their purpose statement. It may be helpful to
create a concept map to align the problem and the purpose statements.
For EdD dissertations, the purpose statement outlines the study’s intent to identify possible solutions to rectify the identified problem. A given problem for an
EdD dissertation might be: The problem is the academic achievement gap between different ethnic groups of students continues to widen in urban schools
despite numerous attempts to rectify this outcome in the past. A related purpose statement might then be: The purpose of this study is to identify strategies
to close the academic achievement gap between different ethnic groups of students.
