Give 3 examples of each and define each of your examples.

1. Describe a controversial topic that involves science ethics or the ramifications of a scientific discovery or theory. Discuss at least one perspective of the topic from the spheres of either religion, politics, sociology, or philosophy. (You do not need to make a collective stand on the topic, only identify issues that relate to the topic and arguments that might be made about the topic by others. Make sure to adequately cite any sources.)

Environmental Impacts
Dr. Seuss had it right long before saving the earth became a global issue. Through his character, the Lorax, he warned of the environmental dangers of progress, development and basically greed among humans, or the “Me! Me! Me!” attitude. Watch the video at the following link:

It is about 25 minutes long. Before you watch, look over the following questions. Be sure to take good notes so that you can answer the questions completely!
L1: How do the changes to the natural resources of the land and affect each animal in the story? (Brown Bar-ba-loots, Some swans, Humming fish)
L2: List at least three environmental risks presented in the story. How do they compare to environmental risks going on in our world today? Give two real-life examples of each.
L3: Brainstorm about how you would correct and/or prevent the problems and issues in The Lorax and in our world. Choose 2 issues mentioned in The Lorax and explain in detail how you would have done things differently than the Once-ler.
Do you recycle materials at home? At school? Do you know what is available to you?
Research online to determine if recycling is available to you. You can use UM-Flint’s address for this search (303 E. Kearsley St, 48502), or if you don’t live in Flint, use your own address.
L4: List the materials that are accepted in the recycle program.
L5: List the materials that are not accepted in the recycle program.
L6: Did anything surprise you? Why or why not?
L7: Do you recycle now? If no, will you start? If still no, what is keeping you from recycling?
Earlier this unit, you learned about the water cycle. Sometimes pollution gets into our lakes, rivers and sewers, but it is not always removed by the sewage treatment plants. We’ve also had several oil spills in the past, even right here in Michigan! Not only does it cause problems for human use, but it also causes serious problems for plants and animals living in and near the water. We’ve done the experiment for you.
