Your final assignment is to complete a critical analysis paper. A critical analysis paper is
composed of two parts: a) Summary and b) Analysis. In sum, you will be summarizing and
analyzing one reading chosen by your professor.
Guidelines:
Summary component
Your summary of the article needs to be a collection of paraphrases of the author’s arguments
in logical sequence. Here are the necessary features of the summary that you must execute
effectively:
• Word limit: 200 – 250
• Bibliographical information (article’s title, year, and author)
• Accurate presentation of article’s thesis or main idea
• Important supporting claims paraphrased, presented in logical order
• Appropriate use of transition and reporting phrases
• Effective concluding statement
Analysis component
Your analysis will follow directly after the summary as part of the same assignment. Do not
include titles or subheadings to separate both pieces of writing. Here are the necessary features
of the analysis component:
• Introduction paragraph (no need to repeat the bibliographical information from the summary)
• Thesis statement that articulates whether you think the article is
persuasive/unpersuasive/somewhat persuasive (make sure your analyses match your thesis
statement)
• Analysis of two separate appeals or claims. Be sure to employ the methods of rhetorical
analysis covered in the course if you are analyzing an appeal (to pathos, ethos, or logos).
Claims should be analysed in terms of supporting evidence and/or logical structure (see
Module 9).
• Critical evaluation of the appeal/claim for each analysis—Why is the appeal/claim persuasive
or not persuasive?
• Conclusion paragraph the summarizes your essay and re-affirms your thesis
• Word limit: 600 – 800
