Your answers must be on a word document. On the problems that require a Venn diagram, (go to the insert menu, click smart art, go to relationships, and then a basic Venn diagram- there are Youtube videos on this if you need help) or use the draw function. If you do the former, you need to put an “S” in any section of the diagram that is shaded in (and then just put an “X” in any section, like you would with pen and paper, where that is what is required). If you do the latter (the draw function), you should do all your typing first, then create a space for the Venn diagrams, and finally do the diagrams. I had problems getting it to save when I tried moving the text or placement of the diagrams around. Save the document, close the document, and open it up again to make sure it actually saved all the drawing.

1. List the four basic categorical statements. For each one: a) state whether it is universal or particular and whether it is affirmative or negative, b) state the letter it is known by (A, E, I, O), and write out its form (e.g., All S are P). (2 points).

For 2-5, indicate what type of statement each sentence is (A, E, I, O) and then translate that sentence into standard categorical form. (2 points each)

5. Very few Americans stick to a healthy diet.

For both 6 and 7, compare the 2 given statements. Namely, draw a Venn diagram for each and then indicate whether the statements are equivalent. (2 points each).

6. Some P are not S; Some S are not P.

7. All S are non-P; All P are non-S.

For 8-9, test the validity of the categorical syllogism using the Venn diagram method we worked on. Include both the Venn diagram showing your work, and a brief statement stating whether the argument is valid (or invalid) and why. (3 points each).

-All M are P.
Therefore, all S are P.

9. -No M are P.
-Some S are M.
Therefore, some S are not P.
