Instructions & Requirements for Essay Exam #2
I. GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
(1) Essay Exam #2 (see below) consists of THREE (3) questions. Be sure to answer ALL THREE (3)
questions.
(2) Write your answers in separate document (all question is one document).
(3) Upload your completed essay exam as a docx., pdf., or pages file using the “Submit Essay #2” link
below.
II. REQUIREMENTS
Your Essay Exam MUST meet the following requirements:
(1) Answer in your OWN words. This is an exam so you are demonstrating that you understand the
material.
(2) DO NOT copy lecture slides. DO NOT use any other sources (e.g., internet, articles, books, other
student’s essays, etc.). Answers that are copied from slides or other sources will NOT receive credit.(3) DO use quotes from the assigned readings to support your claims. Be sure to cite these quotations.
Your citation can be as simple as: “quote” (Shafer-Landau, p. 162).
(4) Your exam should be at least 2 1/2 – 3 pages (approximately 250 words per page).
(5) Note that all answers to “opinion” questions should be at least 4-5 sentences. State your position and
then state your reasons (i.e., evidence) for that position.
(6) Each question has several parts. Be sure to fully answer each part of the question and make sure to
clearly identify which question and part you are answering.

(7) PROOFREAD & REVISE! Remember, this is an ESSAY exam so you will be graded on BOTH content
and writing (i.e., you will be graded on grammar, punctuation, and spelling).
(8) For full credit, you must also follow these formatting guidelines:
Your file name should be your full name and ESSAY1. (For example: amandafavia_ESSAY1.docx)
Your name should appear on the first line in the upper left-hand corner.
The essay should begin two lines below your name.
You should use 12-point font.
You should use double space.
You should indent every new paragraph.
You should only upload docx., pdf. or pages file formats.
DO NOT send any Google docs or other file formats. I may not be able to open these types of files. If I
cannot open your file then I cannot grade your essay and you will not earn credit.

Question #1: The Hippocratic Oath; Readings: The Hippocratic Oath (2 points)
The Hippocratic Oath is an ethical code that provides moral guidance for physicians.
Do you think the Hippocratic Oath provides adequate moral guidance for doctors during the current
pandemic? Be sure to use specific examples from the oath to support your position.
Question #2: The Nurse’s Role and Responsibilities; Readings: Newton, “In Defense of the Traditional
Nurse” and Kushe, “Advocacy or Subservience for the Sake of Patients” (8 points)
A registered nurse no longer wants to perform kidney dialysis upon a terminally ill patient because he isconcerned that the treatment is more harmful than beneficial. The nurse challenges the doctor’s orders,
stating that he has already performed the procedure on the patient and twice had to interrupt it because the
patient suffered cardiac arrest and severe hemorrhaging.
According to Newton, is the nurse justified in challenging the doctor’s orders? Be sure to explain which of
Newton’s arguments support your answer.

Question #3: Patient Autonomy; Readings: Ackerman, “Why Doctors Should Intervene.” (8 points)
A doctor is treating two patients who have both tested positive for COVID-19. Patient A has mild symptoms,
such as a fever, tiredness and a dry cough. Patient B has a more severe case and is experiencing difficulty
breathing and confusion. Both patients refuse to follow the doctors recommended treatment.
According to Ackerman, do both Patient A and Patient B have autonomy? Be sure to explain which of
Ackerman’s arguments support your answer.
