How will I be assessed?

7 point grading scale (see CRA at the end of this document)

Task Description:

You will be required to undertake a report that will critically analyse scholarly and current sources and then apply the penal theories analysed to a real world issue or scenario.

Choose one question from the following list to address in your report/essay:

1.     What are the existing justifications for punishment? Which one is the most convincing argument? Why?

2.     What are the origins of modern forms of punishment? Why did they emerge? How to relate the practice of transportation to this process?

3.     What is the penal-welfare? What is the role of rehabilitation in it? What about the importance of probation and parole?

4.     What are the pains of imprisonment? How to increase the legitimacy of imprisonment?

5.     What are the current problems of indigenous incarceration in Australia? What are the possible reasons behind it? (Alternatively, instead of indigenous incarceration, you can address female incarceration in this question)

6.     What are the origins of fines? Why are they important in contemporary criminal justice systems?

7.     What are the most recent trends in Death Penalty practices? What are the new rationales adopted in the abolitionist movement?

8.     Why is the detention of undocumented migration becoming a concern for students of punishment? What are the practices bringing closer the system of migration detention and the criminal justice system?

9.     What are the reasons behind mass incarceration? Has it become an industry?

10.  How is punishment taking place outside Western democracies? Why is imprisonment becoming a problem all around the globe?

These questions cover the topics of this unit. In case you feel you want to have a different approach to one of these topics, feel free to discuss the possibility with the unit coordinator.

Structure

Students are expected to follow a traditional essay format comprising an introduction, a main body of argument/critique and a conclusion.
Since the essay is 1500 words, you may want to follow the following format:

Introduction: approximately 200 words Main body: approximately 1100 words Conclusion: approximately 200 words

   
   
  • Use primarily ACADEMIC sources (e.g. required readings, additional readings, other journal articles and books you have searched in library databases) rather than media or internet sources. DO NOT USE Wikipedia

o The important thing with referencing is to make sure that:

  • §  you have included all the sources you have cited in your References List;
  • §  everything in your References List has

been cited in your essay;

  • §  your References List is in alphabetical

order; and

  • §  if the marker wanted to follow up an

interesting source, they would have enough information to do so.

Writing Style

• Don’t worry about sounding ‘academic’. Just say what you mean as clearly as you can.

• Acronyms and abbreviations are fine. For example, you might abbreviate ‘criminal justice system’ to ‘CJS’. Just make sure you spell it out in full the first time. You will probably need to use these to remain within the word count.
