ARM CONTRIBUTION TO VERTICAL JUMP LABORATORY

Aim: To assess the effect that vertical jump technique has on the contact phase mechanics and performance of the countermovement jump.

Apparatus: Kistler (B11 9281B) force platform), Kistler amplifier (Type – 9865), Analogue-Digital Converter (PCIN-DAS-1602-16), Panasonic (model HC-W570) Digital Video Camera
Include the sample rate for the force platform and video camera. Additionally for the camera include the shutter speed.
• For the sections in the laboratory report please refer to the assessment booklet.
• For help with the Introduction refer to the lecture from week 1A.
• For help with the Method refer to the document ‘Data Collection Information’ in the Module Assessment Section. Please note the results section is from 12 participants who were under-graduate students with a mean (sd) = 71.45 (10.22) kg and height = 1.72 (0.12) m.
• Remember to include a figure of the laboratory set up. On the figure label the specifications of the equipment. If the figure is inserted into the text as a picture you will save on words.
• The completed results section will be written for you and is available from the 18th November 2021.
• The measures examined are jump height, vertical velocity at take-off, jump impulse, peak vertical ground reaction force, contact time, knee angle at the bottom of countermovement, knee angle at take-off and hip angle at take-off.
• The Discussion is very important and must provide analysis and interpretation of the data sets. Include outcomes from the literature and how this compares to your results. Conclude with a summary of the main outcomes of the study.
• Word count: Your overall word count should include the body/narrative text of the Results section that has been provided for you (this is 158 words).
However, it does not include words within figures/tables, figure/table captions, the reference list, or the appendix.
• Appendix: You do not need to include the raw data or the SPSS output since this has been provided for you.

Include information on:
• The stretch-shortening cycle
• The theories underpinning why arm swing improves jump performance
• Impulse-Momentum relationship
• Impulse = Force x time
• How vertical velocity at take-off is related to maximum vertical displacement.
