Analysis of Variance (ANOVA)

Assignment 3

We have learned that analysis of variance can be used to assess global warming. Suppose you go to a talk on global warming and states that the current global climate has an average temperature of 15 degrees C based on 50 years of data. In a climate with increased CO2, the average global temperature is 17 degrees C based on 50 years of data. Answer the following questions:

1) How would you use variance to assess the importance of that statement? Hint: You have 2 groups, with 2 means, and 50 years of data in each group, describe in the context of “signal to noise”.

2) Suppose that you compare 2 cities: St. Louis and Las Angeles. In both cities, the difference in the means between the warm climate and current climate are 2 degrees C. Would the significance of global warming be the same for both locations? Hint: St. Louis has more distinct seasons than Las Angeles!

3) For your research study, do you foresee using ANOVA as a statistical tool? Why or why not?
