Advocacy has long been discussed as a hallmark of the nursing profession. This week, we will define advocacy both in general and as it relates to patients.
We will also analyze a different view on advocacy through one of the articles.
Module Objectives:
Define advocacy.
Identify the three core attributes of patient advocacy as each relates to nursing.
Describe the role of the nurse in acting as patient advocate.
Argue for or against a contrarian view on patient advocacy.

Express the unique nursing perspective to interprofessional teams to optimize patient outcome.
Engage in ethical reasoning and actions to support the role of patient advocate in a microsystem.
Demonstrate the ability to perform the role of advocate for healthcare consumers.

6.1 Compare/contrast the roles and perspectives of the nursing profession with other care professionals on the healthcare team (i.e., scope of discipline,
education, and licensure requirements).
6.4 Contribute the unique nursing perspective to interprofessional teams to optimize patient outcomes.
6.6 Advocate for high quality and safe patient care as a member of the interprofessional team.
8.3 Promote the image of nursing by modeling the values and articulating the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of the nursing profession.
