Action Research Interpretations McNiff (2002) referred to different models and interpretations of action research that were developed over many years. She characterized different viewpoints related to the purpose of action research as a debate between people interested in adhering to technical standards and methods versus those interested in holding up to ideals and democratic values. She concluded with the following statement: There is no one ‘correct way; you must decide what is right for you, and develop your own views. To do that, however, you need to do some action research; the ‘meaning’ it has for you emerges as you do the research and explain what you are doing and why you are doing it. (McNiff, 2002, “Where did action research come from,” para. 4) Think about the distinction between research methods and democratic values. As a leader, you are surely concerned with concrete results. Would a focus on research methods, democratic values, or concrete results potentially lead to different research questions? What is your current thinking on what is most important to you? If you are currently working, what might be most important to your supervisor or your company?
