Facilitating Relapse Prevention Groups
1. Project Description
a. Describe your field project/ research activity in 2-3 sentences.
As an intern I facilitated a Relapse Prevention Group for high needs clients on probation. The group was a closed group specifically for adult clients enrolled in services as a term of their probation. I used the curriculum that was provided by the agency. It was a 32 week program with a high success rate.
b. What was your role in the project?
My role in the project was to check in the clients at the beginning of the class so that I could give an attendance report to their probation officer. I also facilitated the group by going over the rules of the group at the beginning of the class and make brief introductions. I then went in to the lesson plan for that week and opened up for questions and discussion.
2. Intervention Level

The level of intervention for this Relapse Prevention Group was a micro level intervention because of the nature of one-one one interaction with the clients. Micro practice involves direct practice with clients and their most immediate surroundings (Langer & Lietz, 2014).

Because this Relapse Prevention Group was held in a contained system and also has interpersonal relationships, it is fitting for it to be identified as a micro intervention level. Also, this level of intervention works directly with clients and their families to obtain long-term sobriety. It is an effort that can be accomplished with the help of the clients micro system.

Facilitating a Relapse Prevention group is not what the facilitator does in the class but what the client does with the information learned there. Because clients are managers of their own behaviors, they have the power and learned skill to make the changes needed to better their lives.

Overdose Fatality Review Board
1. Project Description
c. Describe your project/ research activity in 2-3 sentences.
The overdose fatality review (OFR) is an innovative and collaborative data-sharing process to address drug-related overdoses in our community. The purpose of an OFR is to conduct a thorough review of an overdose death in order to better understand the circumstances of overdose deaths and to develop recommendations to prevent future overdose deaths. Special attention is given to healthcare access, recovery supports, substance use history, and social determinants of health. This activity falls under the OD2A grant that was given to the La Paz County Health Department, which is where I am currently interning.
d. What was your role in the project?
This activity is in its infancy stage. I am currently in this role as the Overdose Fatality Review Board Coordinator. I have sent the initial invitations to community leaders and have received 100% positive response. Our first initial meeting is scheduled in two weeks. I have prepared a presentation to provide more information.
2. Intervention Level

The Overdose Fatality Review Board is a mezzo level intervention. Mezzo-level social work practice demands the use of interventions when working with organizations, groups in society, communities, or neighborhoods (Kwan, 2021).

The mezzo level intervention is fitting because it improves organizational functioning and service delivery and community well-being for vulnerable populations. My internship is in a rural area and on tribal land where there are no resources, data being collected or prevention information available currently on overdoses and/or the opioid crisis.

The way that this activity correlates with the theory is by empowering the community to have a voice to make social change. The basic theory of empowerment is you change the environment; you can change yourself. By giving community members information on the opioid crisis and allowing them to make suggestions on how we can collectively make change, will ultimately bring change.

ELC Reopening Schools
1. Project Description
e. Describe your project/ research activity in 2-3 sentences.
This is a state grant that La Paz County was given in efforts to return kids back to school safely after Covid-19. As a part of this plan, a Public Health School Counselor was hired with the focus of counseling kids from grades K-12 that were directly impacted by deaths due to Covid-19.
f. What was your role in the project?
I was hired to fill the position of Public Health School Counselor under the supervision of the school district’s psychologist and an LCSW. I’ve completed assessments, one-on-one counseling and facilitated small groups. I have also provided support to school teachers that have been directly affected by Covid-19 deaths.
2. Intervention Level

Although the grant this activity is under would be categorized as macro level, the scope of work and my involvement in it would be micro level. Micro practice involves direct practice with clients and their most immediate surroundings (Langer & Lietz, 2014).

Micro-level involvement is appropriate for this activity due to my direct interaction with students and teachers. I am seeing them at their school which is one of their most immediate surroundings.

A crisis can be personal, resulting from development through the life cycle, such as the birth of a child or death of a parent (Langer & Lietz, 2014).
