Coursework Specification
3 Assessment Details
3.1 Module Learning Outcomes (MLOs) Assessed by Coursework
Knowledge & Understanding:
MLO1. Select and apply appropriate materials, equipment, engineering technologies and processes in solving engineering design problems.
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
MLO2. Use appropriate computational and analytical techniques to model broadly defined problems relevant to mechanical design issues.
MLO3. Apply a systematic approach to the solution of broadly defined engineering design problems.
3.2 Coursework Tasks to be Completed by Students
The purpose of this coursework assignment is to demonstrate your understanding of the theoretical aspects associated with the engineering design process and its application to new and existing engineering devices, as well as applying the use of computational tools to model and communicate such systems/components.
You are required to make an individual single design report document containing the following:
a) Identify a mechanical product or system that comprises at least 3 parts to solve some form of engineering or consumer problem. You may make appropriate assumptions/engineering judgements on any aspects that cannot be obtained such as internal dimensions. In this assignment you are required to demonstrate the following:
i) Give a brief description of the product and its engineering purpose, for example, what is
the product for and what materials the product is made of (and why). (20%) (MLO1, MLO3)
Maximum 500 words.
ii) Create 3D models of the system in CAD software (Solidworks) and create an assembly
drawing that includes a suitable Bill Of Materials (BOM). Generate an A3 pdf file of the general assembly drawing and include in the report. (30%) (MLO2).
iii) Using CAD (Solidworks) create a 2D technical drawing of one of the most complex parts
that is suitably annotated and dimensioned to communicate details to allow manufacture. Generate an A3 pdf file of this technical drawing and include in the report. (20%) (MLO2).
iv) Create a flowchart for the component that indicates the CAD modelling techniques used
and gives a very brief description of their use in the context of the model (e.g. extrude, revolve, rotate pattern, fillet, cut extrude etc.) – you must identify and use at least 5 different techniques. (20%) (MLO2) (MLO3) Maximum 100 words.
b) Identify and reflect upon a design project that you have previously completed (at Level 4 or in some other activity). Give a brief description of the activities that you executed in completing the design project and represent these activities in the form of a flow chart. Identify a documented model of the engineering design process and represent it via a flowchart. Compare the two flowcharts and identify and comment upon any variations or aspects that may have been done differently between the two. (10%) (MLO3) Maximum 300 words plus diagrams.
Reports are to be submitted to the KB5035 Blackboard site in the Assessment section (the Turnitin system may be used to aid detection of academic misconduct).
3.3 Expected Size of Submission
Individual Report should contain no more than 1200 words excluding A3 technical drawing(s) and other diagrams. Please provide a word count at the end of the report document. Guidance on limits for each section is provided above. Your submission should be a single file of MS Word or pdf file format.
References (sources listed at the end of the manuscript) are free of the word count. The University’s Word Limit Policy (Fig.1.) will be applied,

3.4 Assessment Criteria
Section Marks Format Criteria
a) i 20 Textual description How well you describe product and its engineering features
a) ii 30 A3 assembly drawing Technical correctness of engineering assembly drawing
a) iii 20 A3 component drawing Technical correctness of engineering component drawing
a) iv 20 Flowchart Flowchart indicating features used (variety)
b) 10 Textual
description/flowchart Description of the design via flowchart and comparison against accepted model of process. Reflection on actions/differences.
4 Referral
The Referral Attempt opportunity will generally take place after the end-of-level Progression and Awards Board (PAB). If you become eligible to complete a Referral Attempt but are subsequently unable to undertake the opportunity when required, you will be permitted to re-sit the module at the next scheduled sitting of the module assessment. This will typically entail the suspension of your progression on your programme of study until such time that you have completed the level and become eligible to proceed.
