Below is the learning outcome for this assignment.
Learning Outcome: Distinguish between the different types of data: grouped/ungrouped,
continuous/discrete, and quantitative/categorical data. Construct appropriate visualizations for
the statistical data: bar charts, pie charts, histograms, frequency polygons, etc.
Instructions:
1. With the research area that you have identified in Week-1 of classes, formulate a
research question with one dependent variable and one independent variable.
2. Depending on the nature of your research, follow the steps below:
a. Explore a related website to pick a dataset for data analysis.
b. Construct a simulated dataset in an excel sheet accordingly (you can use
random number generator in Excel or any online products).
3. Verify what type of data they are: grouped/ungrouped, continuous/discrete, and
quantitative/categorical data.
4. Upload the dataset on SPSS software and run Frequency distribution.
5. Submit the detailed technical report following the rubric below:
a. Introduction/Background of research – Describe what you are trying to
investigate. No extensive background is required. 250 words should be enough
to describe your introduction/background.
b. Data Source – Describe on what type of data source you are using to download
your dataset. Include information on the coding system that they have used in the
database. Only include the information for the columns/variables that you chose
for analysis.
c. Verification on type of data – Explain what type of data you are using for your
analysis: quantitative/qualitative, categorical/discrete, continuous/discrete.
d. Research Question – Be concise on what you are trying to infer from the data.
e. Data Analysis – Explain the process that you conducted on SPSS software.
f. Data Interpretation – Discussion – Explain what you observe from the SPSS
results – Sample size, frequency distribution data, charts.
g. Summary of Research Findings – Frequency Distribution – In APA Format.
i. Descriptive Statistics – Table
ii. Descriptive Statistics – Appropriate Visualization created by SPSS
Refer APA manual for guidelines to summarize data on tables and captioning the
figures (SPSS charts).
h. Conclusion
i. Summary of the study
ii. Limitations
iii. Future Research Recommendations
6. The final step is to upload your technical report, SPSS data files, and SPSS output files
on Canvas submission.
Grading: This assignment is worth up to 100 points towards your final grade. The grade for this
assignment will be based on the detailed technical report. On the report, include the titles as
indicated and provide your description for the same. The scoring rubric is given below:
Section Points (Total: 100 Points)

APA Guidelines: Technical Report
• Include a Title Page and List of References (if you are citing any references).
• The report should be typed 12-point Times New Roman and double spaced.
• The report should be clear, concise, and follow APA guidelines.
• APA guidelines to be followed: in-text citations, references, formatting, and style.
Disclaimer: Constructing a simulated dataset for this assignment is a part of class exercise and
to give you practice on data analytic skills. Fabricating a dataset for research
publications/theses/dissertations is not encouraged or supported throughout this course.
