Assessment 3 Instructions: Communications Plan
Create a 3-4 page project communications plan.
Introduction
Note: Complete the assessments in this course in the order in which they are presented.
As we all know, effective communication is key for a successful project. A well-conceived project communications
plan that is shared with all stakeholders is a prudent first step.
Effective communication is a key leadership skill. Project managers need to communicate well—both verbally and in
writing—to keep their projects on track and the team performing. A sound communications plan takes into account
nearly all aspects of a project. Some considerations are:
Team or audience.
Technical platforms (currently available and those that need to be acquired).
Virtual team member requirements.
Levels of stakeholder involvement.
Types of information that must be shared.
Reporting.
Rules for communication.
Types of communication.
Overview
In Assessment 2, you assisted human resources in identifying appropriate members for your team. Now that you
have a team, it is important to document how you plan to facilitate communication with and among your virtual
team members. This is especially critical in complex projects. In this assessment, you will develop a communications
plan that will effectively serve your new virtual team. It should describe platforms and tools, lines of communication,
roles, tasks, approvals, et cetera.
Preparation
The following resources are required to complete the assessment.
CapraTek: Team Leadership and Motivation Part 3.
As you prepare to complete this assessment, you may want to think about other related issues to deepen your
understanding or broaden your viewpoint. You are encouraged to consider the questions below and discuss them
with a fellow learner, a work associate, an interested friend, or a member of your professional community. Note that
these questions are for your own development and exploration and do not need to be completed or submitted as
part of your assessment.
What are some of the best ways to facilitate communication among virtual team members? What tools or
platforms are proving effective?
What needs to be communicated to team members so they are fully aware of their communications
responsibilities? What rules would you suggest?
How important is it to document and share a communications plan? Does it depend upon the type or scope
of the project that you are working on? What might be other considerations?
