2- Book Review

Final Term Paper Overview
Students will choose a book on an addictive behavior that we cover in class. Ideally I do NOT want
you to choose books on alcohol or drug addiction unless you have a very specific interest in the
topic. Once you have chosen your book please send me an email to confirm that it is an
appropriate choice and that there are not too many other students using it (I only allow 2-3
students to use the same book so the sooner you submit your book, the better the chances are that
you will get your choice). The book you choose should be based on one main character (fictional or
real) who is experiencing the behavioral addiction. Your book should NOT be a general overview
book or a self-help book.
The paper should be between 10-15 pages (this page range does not include the title page or
reference page – an abstract is not required). APA formatting required. 12 font Arial or Times New
Roman. Double Spaced.
The term paper should cover the following topics (I would suggest that your paper is organized by
these topic headings as well – I have provided an example of organization below):
 Summary: Provide a 2-3 paragraph summary of the book which provides a good summary
of the addictive behaviour.
 Strengths and Weaknesses: Please provide the strengths and weakness of the book in
relation to understanding the addictive behaviour in relation to class content.
 Theories: Link the book to 2-3 particular theories/perspectives/models that we discussed in
class ** One of those theories/perspective MUST be a sociological/socio-cultural
perspective. You may have to engage in additional research for this section of the term
paper since your text book does a limited job of explaining the theories/models and
perspectives.
 Research Articles: Find 3 academic research articles on a similar topic to the book. Provide a
brief summary of each article and compare and contrast each of the 3 articles in relation to
the book. Each article should have its own heading/section to keep them separated.
