Master degree report
The report consists of three reports and each report should have the following
Introduction, discussion, conclusion, recommendation, references, and appendix (if available). You should select one organization to do the three reports. The details of how to select the suitable organization are mentioned in section 1 of report 1.
In each report, add plots and figures to make the report interesting and enrich the discussions by some theories.
Report 1: outlining the internal economic environment (words: 2000 (+/- 10%), 3-4 pages )
Overview: in this report, you will outline the internal economic environment of your selected organisation. Your outline should include basic details of the organisation, in addition to an examination of the mechanisms and processes used to establish, monitor and maintain its internal economic environment. This may include the roles of specific personnel, organisational structures and reporting mechanisms. Your outline should also analyze the organisation’s culture.

Section 1 – Company Outline
For this portion of your case study, you will select an organisation and outline its internal economic environment. Before selecting an appropriate organisation, you should consider the following key features:
– Organisation type:
You should select an organisation with a strong connection to or reliance upon engineering or technology. The organisation should be producing a technology-based product or service or using technology-based – tools or services to support or deliver a technology-mediated product or service.
– Organisation size:
You may select an organisation of any size, from the very big (think Google) to the very small. However,
the issue here is that of gaining access to appropriate data and information, NOT just marketing bumpf! When deciding to select a large or small organisation, consider their attributes:
Large organisations may be interesting because they have the resources to undertake the development of new systems and technologies.
Smaller organisations, whilst inherently limited in what they can achieve, can be creative and express remarkably innovative ideas. Their problem is in being able to acquire the resources to innovate practices and develop and deploy new technology.
– Organisational maturity:
Analysing a mature organisation can help demonstrate what can be achieved and how to go about it and help identify what skills and competencies are needed to achieve given challenges and tasks.
By analysing a mature organisation, you can understand certain levels of achievement and how those levels were reached. Through your analysis of a mature organisation, you can identify what skills and competencies were necessary to successfully meeting any challenge or task.
On the other hand, mature organisations may be very fixed in traditional methods (‘because it works’ and ‘why try to change something that isn’t broken’) and may ignore or even reject opportunities for positive innovation.
A new organisation may prove rather different. Invariably the new organisation is faced firstly with the issue of ‘survival’! However, brilliant ideas and the energy of youth does not necessarily pay the bills. But then again, they can help pave the way to facing down challenges. Consider the examples of Google or Tesla!
The key is not just about being lean and mean or young and rash, but agile and adaptable and being prepared to think differently.
In your outline, assess the following basic details about your selected organisation:
• Size and location
• Mission and Intent
• Products, services, and processes
• Marketplace and market segments (clients)
• Position in marketplace
• Technology base
• Organisational structure
• Organisational competencies and their applications
In Week 2, you will further consider the internal economic environment of your selected organisation by analysing its structure, technology, and culture in section 2 of this the report.
Section 2 – Outline of Internal Economic Environment and Associated Processess
This Section 2 of report outlines the internal economic environment of your selected company or project. It should provide details of the mechanisms and processes used within the company or project to establish, monitor, and maintain its internal economic environment. This may include the roles of specific personnel, organisational structure and reporting mechanisms.
Consider: What aspects of the internal economic environment of the organisation need to be addressed in report ? The short answer is … All of them! For example:
• How is the organisation organised?
• How is it structured?
• What does it do?
• What technology does it use?
• What specific competencies does it have and how does it use them?
Consider: An important characteristic of technology-based organisations is often the extent to which they are actively engaged in innovation. In this regard, what is the status of your selected organisation? Is it an active participant in the development and/or use of new technology and/or processes? How does it approach innovation and change issues? Does it explicitly ‘drive’ innovation as a necessary condition of being in business or is it a user of an externally sourced innovation or technology?
Consider: How does your selected organisation exhibit a sense of organisational culture?
Answer the following questions about the organisation’s culture:
• Does it exhibit hierarchical control mechanisms in the way it organises its activities?
• Is there a mechanism for staff feedback to management?
• Does it insist on a definite dress code for employees?
• Is there a focus on the health and wellbeing of employees?
• Does the organisation acknowledge the value of its human resources?
• How is this demonstrated and what effect does it have on the way the organisation goes about its business?
• How does the organisation communicate internally?

A SWOT Analysis is very useful analysis instrument that can help to better understand an organisation (and certainly works well in the context of report 1).
SWOT stands for: Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. It is commonly used to implement an ‘Internal Analysis’ or ‘Internal Audit’ of an organisation, particularly using the first two elements: Strengths and Weaknesses. In effect these two analysis approaches help to identify what an organisation sees as being its particular strengths and capabilities or potential problem areas, whether in terms of technology, or human resources, or organisational ability, or location (logical and geographical) or product range, or customer base, or supply chain, or financial status, or political exposure or support, or systems. Similarly, the remaining two elements, Opportunities and Threats, can provide insight into the areas in which the organisation has a unique opportunity to energise itself from within as well as identifying areas where there may be potential for internal strife or conflict that may disrupt from within and may demand urgent attention. By conducting a SWOT analysis, you may better assess your organisation’s internal economic environment.
Report 2: Outlining the external economic environment (words: 2500 (+/- 10%), 4-5 pages)
Overview: In this report, you will outline the external economic environment of your selected organisation. You will also begin to analyse how the external environment impacts the organisation. In particular, your analysis will focus on the details of the surrounding marketplace, as well as the political, economic, sociocultural, technological, ecological, and legal aspects of the external environment.
Details:
Section 1 – Identifying the External Economic Environment
This section of the case study should identify and examine the external economic environment of the selected organisation and, in particular, should address the following:
• The nature and characteristics of the surrounding economic environment
• The presence of existing or potential customers in the surrounding economic environment
• The presence of existing or potential for competitors in the surrounding economic environment
• The impact of the existing surrounding environment on the selected organisation, enterprise or project
In this section of your case study, you should provide details about the following features of your selected organisation’s external environment. A SWOT analysis is a useful instrument in this stage, particularly to address the external influences that may provide ‘opportunity’ for your company or represent a form of ‘threat’ or negative influence on the company’s operations.
• The size of the marketplace
• The technological complexity or otherwise of the marketplace
• The industrial sector of the marketplace in which your company operates
• The political stability and relevant influences on the marketplace
• The dynamics of the marketplace
• The economic dimensions, past, current, and projected future
• The presence of competitors in the marketplace
• The potential for new entrants into the marketplace
Section 2 – Analysing the external economic environment and its impact on the selected company or project
In this section, you should analyse the impact of the external economic environment on the organisation you have selected. This analysis is most likely best undertaken as a PESTEL analysis that addresses the external environment of the selected company and the may influences that come to bear on the company.
As such, it will need to address the following key parameters:
• Political
• Economical
• Sociocultural • Technological • Ecological
• Legal
Report 3: Identifying the impact of the organization on the external environment (words: 3500 (+/- 10%), 5-7 pages)
Overview: In this assignment, you should identify and examine the impact that the selected organisation has on its external economic environment. In particular, your report should look at how the organisation affects customers, suppliers, competitors, regulators, industry associations, the government and the media.
Details:
Identifying the Impact of the Organisation on the External Environment.
This section of the case study should identify and examine the impact that the selected organisation has on its external economic environment. In your report, address all of the following about how your organisation affects the external economic environment:
• The nature and characteristics of the company’s products and services that induce presence in the surrounding economic environment.
• How the company presents itself to its marketplace, for example through relationships it has with its customers, suppliers, competitors, regulators, industry associations, the government, the media.
• What position does the company have in its marketplace, for example is it a technological leader?
• Does the company engage in innovation practices that further engage its customer base?
• How does the company manage its communications with its surrounding environment?
• Does the company have direct competitors?
• Or does it operate in a ‘Blue Ocean’ style environment?
• If so, how does it do this?
• How does the company respond to shifts and changes in the surrounding economic environment?
