An analytical essay, as its name suggests, is where you analyze a text. A literary analytical essay is different from a summary/response in that you do not summarize the text (although maybe briefly to make a point). In an analytical paper, you use evidence from the text to support a claim that you are making about the text. For example, in the Stephen King essay “Why We Crave Horror Movies,” you may focus on his opening statement where he states, “we are all mentally ill,” and discuss why he makes what some would consider such an outrageous claim and what you think he means.

For this assignment, you can choose to do an analysis on Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery,” William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” or Raymond Carver’s “Cathedral.” You can also choose to do an analysis of Stephen King’s Why We Crave Horror Movies.”
