ASSIGNMENT 3: ALGEBRA Solve the following problems using algebra (i.e., with equations). To help you get started, you may wish to employ Pólya’s four problem-solving steps. Remember to check that your final answers make sense and do indeed solve the problems. Write up your solutions clearly and concisely, explaining your reasoning. As a rough guide, use half a page to explain how to solve each problem, including any diagrams (assuming single-space formatting). There are 6 problems, so your entire document should be approximately 3 pages. 1. Sergio spends 3/8 of his monthly income on rent. Sergio’s rent is $930. What is Sergio’s monthly income? 2. Molly made some Saskatoon berry tarts. Molly gave ¼ of her tarts to Alanis. Then Molly gave 2/3 of the remaining tarts to Kateri. At that point, Molly had 3 tarts left. How many Saskatoon berry tarts did Molly make initially? 3. There are 90 hockey sticks arranged into 4 groups. The second group has 9 more hockey sticks than the first group. The third group has half as many hockey sticks as the second group. The fourth group has 5 fewer hockey sticks than the sum of the hockey sticks in the second and third groups. The number of hockey sticks in the fourth group is also twice as many as the number of hockey sticks in the first group. How many hockey sticks are in each group? 4. Jabril is ordering coffee drinks for the monthly staff meeting. One-fourth (1/4) of the staff ordered a latte, 1/8 of the staff ordered a cappuccino, and 3/5 of the remaining staff ordered an Americano. Some staff members ordered a mocha. If Jabril ordered 6 Americanos, how many coffee drinks did he order in total? 5. There were 15% more girls than boys on the local swim team. There were 3 more girls than boys. How many swimmers were there on the team? 6. A restaurant is choosing between two suppliers for its burger buns. Better Bakers charges $6 per dozen buns plus $8 delivery charge (whatever the size of the order). The Art of Bread charges $6.50 per dozen plus $4 delivery charge (whatever the size of the order). How many buns would the restaurant need to order so that Better Bakers is the less costly supplier? Grading Criteria 5 marks for each problem, 30 marks total: Equations are mathematically accurate and contain no mistakes. Description is clear and concise and uses appropriate mathematical terminology. Use of the chosen strategy is outlined, and explanations are given for calculations, expressions, and equations that are used. Diagrams and/or mathematical reasoning are used appropriately and are explained. Final answer makes sense and correctly solves the problem. If an incorrect answer is given for a problem, the mark for that problem will be 0/5.
