Assignment 1

Read the following questions carefully and structure your replies in accordance with the number of marks allocated:

1.     Briefly discuss the reality concerning the following Myths:

a.     Local and foreign volunteers with any kind of medical background are needed at  major incident and disaster scenes

b.     Epidemics and plagues are inevitable after every disaster

c.     Disasters are random killers

d.     Things are back to normal within a few weeks following a disaster

2.     Discuss the idea that Natural Disasters are by their very nature impossible to mitigate against. Use examples   where possible to substantiate you arguments.

4.     South Africa deployed both USAR (Urban Search and Rescue) as well as medical resources to the earthquake that occurred in Haiti on the 12 January 2010. Please review the literature that has been published as regards this response and highlight the key lessons that have been learnt and the problems experience by the responders.
