The book, “The True Story of Hansel and Gretel” is the main/central text to be analyzed and will need to be read by the writer. I have attached 4 sources that can be used in the paper (only 2 are required), 1 is the Grimm brothers version of the story. In addition, I have attached 2 examples of essays my instructor shared to give the writer a sense of what she is looking for.
Here is the assignment description from the instructor:
Texts: 1 of the course listed books: Alemaddine, Murphy or Oyeyemi (Carter or Broumas are also options)
+1 article from the course list
+ 1 or more additional materials from the course (book, article, tale, shorter literary work….)
Objectives:
• Close reading of literary works to generate observations about style and content
• Interpretation of authorial purpose or social significances
• Draw connections between multiple texts, literary and scholarly.
• To use scholarly writing about Fairy Tales from one or more fields as a lens to examine literature.
• To tie the above together into a unified, original analysis.
This assignment asks for an academic analysis. Your task is to analyze how Fairy Tales are represented in literary texts, drawing connections between them and using course articles as lenses. Your central text is the novel or collection of stories (or 2 of these). For the “lens” article, choose one of the scholarly articles (for example psychology, literary criticism, feminist analyses, etc.). For your third source you may choose another article, or other stories, poems or tales from the course list.
Remember that this is not a “review” or a “book report,” but rather a textual analysis. The purpose of a review is to recommend a book, or to encourage readers/viewers to skip it — in short, to praise or criticize. Analysis is more complex and less judgmental. Similarly, a review presumes that its reader has not read the book (yet) and so summarizes enough of its plot to support its assessment. While you, too, will use detailed references to your chosen texts to support your point, you should presume that your paper’s readers (me and your classmates) have read them and avoid lengthy plot summaries.
