For each problem, clearly define the problem statement (Given), what the problem asks to Find (including units), and then show your work under the Solution. Each answer should be boxed and should include the correct units and sign convention. Submit your completed assignment as a PDF to Blackboard using the upload link provided. No assignment will be accepted after the due date.
1) The ship’s barometer reads 27 in-Hg. A pressure gage at a turbine inlet reads 460 psig. A vacuum gage at the turbine exhaust reads 23 in-Hg. Draw the pressure relationship graphs for these gages. What are the turbine inlet and exhaust pressures in psia?
2) The main ballast tanks in a submarine are open to the sea at the bottom of the tanks. The tanks are filled with air when the submarine is on the surface. If the ballast tanks’ bottom grates are 35 feet below the surface of the sea, what is the air pressure in the ballast tanks (psia; psig)?
3) 12 pounds of working fluid is moving with a velocity of 70 ft/sec through a process. As it moves from state point 1 to state point 2 its elevation increases 80 ft, it delivers 9000 ftlbf of work, and it receives 70 Btu of heat. During this movement the pressure and density of the fluid do not change. Determine the change in internal energy of the working fluid (Btu/lbm).
4) An ideal gas initially at 13 psia and 210 degF is compressed from 25 ft3 to 10 ft3 . If the final temperature is 400 degF, what is the final pressure (psia)?
5) A closed thermodynamic cycle has a thermal efficiency of 33%. The energy rejected to the heat sink is 700 Btu/lbm. Draw the heat engine concept sketch. What is the net work (Btu/lbm) of the cycle? What is the heat supplied (Btu/lbm) to the cycle?
6) A submarine running at full speed produces 14,500 shp with the propeller shaft spinning at 200 RPM. The reduction gear ratio is 15 with an efficiency of 94%. What is the torque on the propeller shaft? What speed are the turbines running? What is the power output by the turbines? If two turbines power the reduction gears and each has equal output, what is the torque output of one turbine? If the reduction gear losses go to the sub’s lube oil system, what is the heat transfer to the lube oil (Btu/hr)?
