Creative Writing

For this creative writing assignment, you have two options based on the readings for the week:

I. Sylvia Plath’s “Lady Lazarus”:

The title of this should be “____________Lazarus” (fill in the blank with your own term). As a confessional poet, tell us how you are Lazarus. Lazarus was raised from the dead, so what have you risen from? You can make this as personal or as impersonal as you want — but write in the form and style of Plath.

II. Parent (Caregiver) Poems:

Choose one of the poems we have discussed this week from Plath’s “Daddy” (this could be Mommy or whatever title you give the one who raised you), Lorde’s “Black Mother Woman” (for this, change “Black” to whichever term you want, but keep Mother Woman, thinking about the ideal images we assign mothers), Brooks’ ‘the mother,” or Roethke’s “My Papa’s Waltz” (you can change waltz to some other dance that you participate in with your parental figure). For these poems, you can either talk about your relationship with your father or mother or the one who raised you.

Have fun with it, be creative, and try to imitate the form (rhyme, meter, cadence, structure) of the original poem.
