MIDTERM
Midterm Exam Objectives:
· Evaluate and analyze primary sources featured in Through Women’s Eyes, 5th edition including maps, graphs, images and textual documents.
· Analyze and interpret evidence obtained from Through Women’s Eyes, 5th edition, formulate a solid thesis statement in response to the Midterm Exam Essay Question, and compose a cogent argument in support of the thesis statement.
· Follow all of the exam directions.
Directions: The Midterm Exam essay question is based on the primary sources located at the end of all assigned chapters and information from your textbook. As you analyze the primary sources, I suggest that you consider both the source of each document and the author’s point of view. Be sure to: 1. Carefully re-read pertinent information from your textbook.
2. Read each pertinent primary source carefully, noting key phrases and words that address the Midterm Exam essay question.
3. Based upon your own knowledge of the topic and on the evidence found in the primary sources and the textbook assigned for the course, formulate a thesis statement that directly answers the Midterm Exam essay question.
4. Citing a minimum of THREE primary sources is mandatory. Primary sources are located at the end of each of the assigned chapters. DO NOT OVER QUOTE. You are required to cite the primary source with the a clear description of the source and the page number (or location number of if you are using a digital copy) parenthetically.
For the digital version of the textbook:

5. New Roman, 12 point font, single spaced. “ 6. Your 1200-1700 word response to the Midterm Essay Standard essay form (i.e., an introduction containing the thesis statement as the last sentence or two of this first paragraph, at least three body paragraphs with solid analysis of the supporting evidence, and a fully developed conclusion paragraph) is required. DO NOT exceed the word limit. Only the course materials may be used in answering the Midterm essay question; citing/quoting/paraphrasing outside sources is prohibited. Excerpts from previously submitted coursework for this course or any high school/college courses are not allowed. Strive for clarity, depth, and precision in your essay response; substantial points will be deducted for overly general essays. Citation from the required documents is mandatory;
Midterm Exam Essay Question: Compare and contrast the 19th century abolitionist movement and the women’s rights movement (in the United States). Please note: “compare and contrast” requires a strong analysis of similarities as well as differences. A thesis statement must specifically answer the question asked. PLEASE DO NOT WRITE: “The 19th century abolitionist movement and the women’s rights movement shared many similarities and differences” or something similar— THAT IS NOT A THESIS STATEMENT. Your thesis should read something like this (and yes, you may use this fill-in-the-blank thesis, if you wish): During the 19th century, the abolitionist movement and the women’s rights movement in the United States shared __________, _____________, and ___________. However, the movements dramatically differed in _____________, _____________, and _____________. WARNING: Please do not include that one movement focused on the abolition of slavery while the other focused on securing women’s rights as a difference between the two movements—that is a simply a definition, not an interpretation. Your entire essay should focus on whatever you insert in those blanks. Typically, some students will only address similarities OR they will only write about differences. DO NOT MAKE THAT MISTAKE—it will result in a substandard grade on the Midterm.
