Submission Format
The submission should be in the form of a Hand copy and Turnitin with appropriate use of structure and
referencing, as per the below:
1. Preferred font is Arial and size 10. Heading size can be increased but make sure to keep the same format
throughout this report.
2. 1.5x spacing is required between sentences.
3. The first page should have an introduction to the assignment, which should also contain your views.
4. The body should follow next.
a. Notes should be typed and drawings presented neatly. Images/Pictures may be copied & pasted but
need to be referenced.
b. Headings, Images/Pictures, Used equations must be numbered for traceability purpose.
5. A brief conclusion should be at the end with your comments and views.
6. The last page should have your reference sources. Preferable style – Harvard style. Always make sure to write
the source of the copied images/pictures.

ASSIGNMENT TITLE: Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
Assignment Brief and Guidance
Scenario
Completing your lab work at Emirates Structures, your manager wants to next test your understanding and skill in Finite
Element Analysis (FEA). You have been asked by your manager to do basic structural analysis, using the FEA
methodology, in one of the fully equipped computer labs provided to you by the company. You are to submit a report
containing your results as soon as you are done. Please ensure that in your final report, you validate your FEA results
with mathematical / analytical calculations and explain the discrepancies between the FEA and mathematical results, if
any.

In this assignment, you will be solving a bridge truss as shown in the figure 1. Conisder the truss beams to have circular
cross-section with diameter of 30 cm. The material can be taken as steel.
Perform linear static sructural analysis in ANSYS and find the following:
(a) Deformed shape of the bridge truss.
(b) Location of the frame undergoing maximum deflection.
(c) Maximum tension, compressive and shear force.
(d) Reactions at the support.
(e) Compare the reaction forces with hand calculations using the concept of equilibrium of rigid body. Drawing the free
body diagram is a must.
