Initial Post Instructions

Before we begin graphing systems of equations, a good starting point is to review our knowledge of 2-D graphs. These graphs are known as 2-D because they have two axes. Find an online image of a graph to use as the foundation of your discussion. (This is easily accomplished by searching within Google Images.)

Using your graph as the example:

1. Select any two points on the graph and apply the slope formula, interpreting the result as a rate of change (units of measurement required); and

2. Use rate of change (slope) to explain why your graph is linear (constant slope) or not linear (changing slopes).

Embed the graph into the post by copying and pasting into the discussion. You must cite the source of the image. Also be sure to show the computations used to determine slope.

Please begin by finding an image of a curve on the coordinate plane (a graph) online, and post it in your discussion. Then, read the graph to provide two points that lie on that curve. They should take the form:

point 1:

point 2: ,

*Of course, you should use actual numbers from your graph for the coordinates 🙂

Next, please use these points to find the slope and be sure to show your work. Recall that we can do this by calculating “rise over run” which I would formally write this way:

Slope = m =

Finally, please explain if this is the same slope all along the curve (constant slope) or if it changes in different places (changing slope). To do this, you will need to find the slope using a SECOND SET of points. What will it mean if the new slope is calculated to be different? What if it’s the same?
