Healthcare Management

A‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍ssessment 1: Essay Task aims: The aim of this assessment is to describe and discuss how a key factor (demographic, cultural or socioeconomic) influences the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, families, and communities. Understanding the determinants of health and the ability to think beyond the individual to the ‘causes of the causes’ is vital when considering how to practice effective health care. When considering health interventions, it is important to use credible evidence from sources, such as epidemiological data and evaluate relevant strategies to inform quality decision making and advocacy. The assessment addresses the following course objectives (COs): CO1. Describe key demographic, cultural and socio-economic factors that underpin the diverse health issues and experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. CO5. Discuss contemporary healthcare strategies as they relate to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and communities and explore barriers and enablers with regard to healthcare delivery. Task description: In this assessment, you will write a formal, academic essay of 2000 words. The essay will focus on a chronic health condition experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. You will explain how a key demographic, cultural or socioeconomic factor impacts upon this health issue. You will then describe the efficacy of an contemporary healthcare strategy in relation to the chronic health condition. This healthcare strategy may be a program, service or framework. Additional information and resources about the assessment are in How to complete the task and assessment resources below. Your essay must include references to support and illustrate your argument. You must use the UniSA Harvard Referencing system for in-text references and your reference list for ALL material which is not your own. This includes academic references, quality primary sources e.g. Government websites, images apart from your own, and online articles. There are examples of how to do this in the UniSA Harvard Referencing system guide. When considering references for your responses, you may use the course readings, but are also expected to research information more widely and refer to additional literature. There is also an approximate word count allocated to each part which you need to follow (below). If you are over or under the total word count (2000 words) by 10% or more, marks will be deducted. The word count DOES include in-text referencing and headings and DOES NOT include tables, legends and reference lists. As you prepare your assessment, remember to refer to the Marking Rubric which explains how your essay will be marked. How to complete the task and assessment resources: In your essay you must: 1. Identify and describe ONE chronic health condition experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. You must choose a DIFFERENT chronic health condition from the condition you wrote about in Task 2 Poster.‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍2. Identify at least TWO demographic, cultural AND/OR socio-economic factors that contribute to this chronic health condition in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, and describe how they relate to the condition. (PLEASE NOTE- these factors are not what we would typically consider biomedical or behavioural risk factors, i.e. it is not poor nutrition, smoking, physical inactivity. Instead we are looking for you to identify a non-medical factor, i.e. a social or cultural factor or the physical conditions in the environment in which people are born, live, work and age). 3. Describe ONE contemporary healthcare strategy in relation to the chronic health condition you have chosen, and discuss its efficacy. 4. Provide a brief overview of the key barriers and enablers of health care delivery (broadly) for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and communities. Considering your chosen health care strategy, describe at least one barrier and one enabler that has been/should be considered when implementing this strategy. You will find plenty of material in the course resources across topics 1-3, to support your response. However wider searching of the academic literature is encouraged.
