Caselet Write-Up Guidelines
Three caselet write-ups are required, each representing 8 percent of your grade, and any of the caselets in the course are free to be written up. Caselet write-ups must be completed and submitted individually.
The case-study approach has long been used in business schools as a way of improving business managers’ thinking and understanding. The caselets that we will discuss are chosen to highlight examples of microeconomics in action. The articles represent microeconomic concepts as seen in the business world and are taken directly from the business and popular press.
Each written caselet should be no more than a maximum of 3-pages, single spaced, using 12-point font, and you should spend no more than a paragraph explaining the case events. The caselet is not a time to summarize the entire caselet, instead, you need to focus on the analyzing the content of the caselet utilizing economic lessons that you have been taught; really think about why we assigned that caselet to that specific topic’s readings.
Be sure to be both clear and concise in your writing. Also, be sure to organize your thoughts in a logical manner that flows well in the story that you are telling. I encourage outside research to supplement what is discussed in the caselet (i.e. what type of market is the company in and how did you come to that conclusion, how did the decisions being made affect the company’s profits?, would you have done things differently and why/why not?, what has happened since the caselet was published and what insights does that provide?, etc.) At a minimum, please address: the economic tools that you’ve been taught to help analyze both the circumstances discussed in the assigned caselet and the decisions made by management.
Please note: Your grade on the caselets will reflect your application of economic analysis as it relates to corporate strategy. You should emphasize what you have been taught and it is critical that you make the economic connections with the assigned caselets to earn maximum points. The list of grading criteria that I will use to determine your grade for each caselet report is shown below:
• Textbook Key Concepts (50%) – analyzed and applied
• Writing Methods (15%) – well organized, clear and concise, good use of grammar.
• Outside Research (15%) – how much depth/breadth was added to report, if applicable
• Timeline (10%) – was the lens of time utilized (what happened before the caselet was written? How is it relevant to the caselet?), if applicable
• Visuals (10%) – use of charts, graphs, and other visuals, if applicable
Please inform your professor if you have any questions or need any additional guidance.
