Thermodynamics

Problem (25/25 points)
Consider the integrated heat pump system, which was awarded with Platinum LEED Home award, as
available at http://www.platinumleedhome.com/renewableenergysystems.html with the thermodynamic
data, analyze it thermodynamically and assess its performance.
You need to apply to a house selected with reasonable capacities and make conceptually correct
assumptions, based on the state properties given in the document. Consider the efficiencies for mechanical
devices as 85%. You are now expected to do the following:
• Draw a specific layout of the system for your own application with all state points
• Draw an actual T-s diagram to show all data points/states
• Prepare a table to list all state point values
• Write all mass, energy, entropy and exergy balance equations for each component of the system
• Calculate all exergy destructions and explain how you can reduce these
• Calculate the energy and exergy efficiencies for the overall system and energy and exergy COPs for
the heat pump system.
• Discuss the results and potential applications.
• Link the efficiency to environmental impact and sustainability mathematically and describe in brief.
Remark:
a) A zero tolerance policy is implemented for any kind of misconduct/cheating.
