Assessment Details There are 3 parts to this assignment. Part 1: Developing a rationale for a piece of research For this part of the assessment you are required to select a topic relating to sport, which you believe warrants further examination. From this, you must: a. Develop a research question relating to the topic. This research question should be constructed with qualitative research in mind. b. Provide a brief introduction to the topic and develop a rationale for the research question you have developed. This should include some reference to relevant, upto-date literature. (Suggested word limit for Part 1: 300 words) Part 2: Developing an interview/ focus group schedule Building from the research question you have developed, design an interview or focus group schedule which will allow you to explore this topic. Please state whether the schedule is intended for a focus group or an interview – this can be done by way of a heading (e.g. Focus Group Schedule). Please note that this section does not require you to write a methodology or justify the choice of interview or focus group. (Suggested word limit for Part 2: 300 words) Part 3: Reflecting on different methodologies Critically reflect on the use of qualitative methods for carrying out research in your discipline. This reflection should consider (although should not be limited to) the following: 1. The advantages and disadvantages of qualitative (and by contrast, quantitative) methodologies; 2. Different methods of data collection, and issues relating to reliability and validity; 3. The suitability of qualitative methods for and/or applicability of qualitative findings to your area of study. Reference should be made to relevant methods and discipline-specific literature where appropriate. (Suggested word limit for Part 3: 600 words) Assessment criteria Knowledge/ Understanding (30%) The ability is shown to select, organize, and apply knowledge accurately, perceptively and creatively in the development of a research question which is underpinned by a strong and succinct rationale. The interview schedule shows careful thought and understanding about qualitative methods and coherently addresses the research question. Demonstrates insightful, systematic and critical understanding of the issues relating to the use of qualitative methods within the specified discipline. Critical Thinking/ Analysis (30%) The ability is shown to insightfully and critically consider literature in order to develop a strong, wellinformed rationale. Demonstrates an ability to systematically and rigorously reflect on the commonalities and differences in the use of different methodologies which appreciates both philosophical and practical issues. The ability is shown to think critically, rigorously and creatively about issues related to qualitative research and consider these within the discipline in depth, making well-informed and balanced judgments. The ability to propose new or alternative arguments and perspectives may be shown. Reading/ Research (20%) There is strong evidence of independent reading/research from a wide range of sources. A very good/excellent range of appropriate reading/research is used critically and selectively to support the answer. The ability to draw on evidence from other disciplines may be evident. Presentation/ Communication (20%) Presentation and communication is very good/excellent, engaging and shows originality, as applicable. The assignment is very well written/presented, structured and organized.
