Focusing health care delivery on patient needs and preferences is regarded as an important way for improving the quality of patient care. However, it has been often stated that patients are seldom the best judges of their medical care.
Analyse and discuss these statements in terms of the current trend by organisations to improve quality by redirecting policy and care delivery so that it is patient centred.
Additional Information:
Give reasons for and against the following two statements along with a general point, with references from various scholarly journal articles – make sure to include searches via PubMed, other scholarly databases & various textbooks:
1. Focusing health care delivery on patient needs and preferences is regarded as an important way for improving the quality of patient care
2. It has been often stated that patients are seldom the best judges of their medical care
Please make sure conclusion is along the line of:
Patients’ needs certainly should be taken into account when proving quality health care. But like with most the solution, it is unfortunately not black and white. Patients need to be taken into account but this needs to be done in a manner where the patients lack knowledge in the health care system or medical profession does not hinder their own care. (e.g. patient does not want to wait for more than 10 mins to see a medical professional, but they don’t realise that the Dr is treating a complicated case and it would be dangerous and unethical to not spend adequate

time with the patient before them. Just as the Dr, would do the same for them if the situation was reversed)
