Some guidelines for writing a good essay

The following outlines a number of things to consider in preparing a good essay- I hope that you will find it useful.

  • A good essay will demonstrate knowledge of the subject you are writing about. So it must be written clearly, it has to cover the subject area adequately, and it has to explain the subject area in a logical manner. A good essay will demonstrate evidence for the conclusions which are drawn.

  • From the first paragraph of the introduction it should be clear what the objectives are: “In this essay I will review……….., and try to show that……”.  In the conclusion, try to tie things together, perhaps suggesting future directions.

·
The point of an essay is to show your knowledge of the subject.  To convey the necessary information, you need to write short, concise sentences. You should always organise your essay under specific sub-headings to provide it with greater focus.

A good essay requires considerable forethought and planning.  Planning should take more time than writing.  You should note the major points you want to cover, and arrange them in logical order.  These points could then, perhaps, make headings and subheadings for your essay.  Under each heading you should think about all the minor points which need covering.  In this way you end up with a list of the points made by each and every sentence.  Good planning reduces the time taken to write an essay, reduces its length, and vastly increases your ability to show your knowledge.   Often, the longer the essay, the poorer the quality, as a lengthy essay will lack focus and coherence.

  • When quoting scientific names use a capital letter for the genus but not for the specific name.  Underline both, e.g. Homo sapiens, or use italics (i.e. Homo sapiens).  Word-processing makes essays much easier to alter and read.  Use a word-processor and make sure the lines are double-spaced, and use a spell-checker. Also leave good sized margins (2.5 cm) for feedback comments.

  • Always include figures in your essay to illustrate important points.  Give titles to the figures (or tables) and provide each with an explanatory legend but do not repeat text used in the main part of your essay.  In your essay refer to them in the main text “as shown in Figure 2…”.
