Middle Range Theories

Module 5 – Overview-2
During our course so far, we have addressed the different scientific paradigms, the nursing metaparadigm, and grand nursing theories. Grand theories are so big and can be so abstract that some nurses find it difficult to use them in practice. That is where this module’s content comes in – with middle range theory.
While chapter 10 from your required textbook readings focuses on the importance of middle range theories, chapter 11 focuses on the organization (high, middle, or low) of this theory level and discusses well-known middle-range theories.
Most grand nursing theories use the metaparadigm concepts of person, environment, health, and nursing. Mid-range theories may be derived from the grand theories but may only address some of those concepts; they may also translate grand theories into practice theories or situation-specific theories that have real-world application to nursing. Some middle-range theories are more context specific.
As your readings point out, these middle-range theories are important because they may be more useful than grand theories, tend to support prediction better than grand theories and nurses are more likely to use them in practice and relate the concepts to interventions needed to promote positive patient outcomes.
Overview:
In this module, you were provided an overview of middle range theories in nursing, of the high, middle, and low types. For this module, choose a middle range theory from nursing in which you are interested. You may select one from the textbook or secure permission to use one you found independently. Search the literature to assess the level of activity around the theory. Determine if it is, is not, or may be related to a nursing grand theory.
Instructions:
Your concise primary post (~ 400-600 words) should clearly address new insight gained after completing and reflecting on the learning activities. Incorporate application to your current and/or future nursing practice. Support your primary post with at least two APA-formatted scholarly sources.
For this discussion, address the following:
1. Identify and briefly explain the theory’s purpose and main concepts
2. Briefly identify the linkage of the mid-range theory with a grand theory. Provide your rationale that it is, is not, or may possibly be related to a particular grand theory.
3. How can the mid-range theory be used to promote positive patient outcomes, nursing research and evidence-based practice in your practice area of interest?
