For this reflection, I want you to explore some of the differences you hear between the end of the Baroque Era and the the end of the Classical Era by
comparing two pieces: Bach’s “Little Fugue” and the first movement from Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 11 “Serioso.” Using your music vocabulary, discuss
the different instrumentations, forms, styles, use of dynamics, textures, and any other aspect of the two samples, tying what you hear into some of the trends
that were changing in music during that time. The fugue form is highly structured and follows strict rules based in logic. How does Beethoven sound
compare? Do you think he wrote the string quartet with logic in mind, or was he following a different sound?
