Identify a company/organization that has been featured prominently in the news in the last month (either a local or national company/organization). The
newsworthy aspect of this organization could either be positive or negative.
When assessing this company/organization, take into consideration the ROPES approach to communications planning and develop an outline of a plan for
the company/organization to manage the newsworthy issue/crisis or to take advantage of the opportunity the situation presents. In other words, if the
situation is negative in nature, develop a plan to attempt to “fix” the problem. If the situation is positive in nature, develop a plan that allows the
company/organization to capitalize on/maximize these benefits.
Consider if the situation is an INDUSTRY problem – for example, the impact of consuming sugary drinks or soda on the health of young people – or if the
situation is a company/organization-specific problem – for example, a food handling or sourcing problem that creates health concerns for customers.
So, if the issue is both a company/organization AND industry concern (ie auto safety), what role might a trade group/association play in addressing the
problem? For example, would you recommend working with government official in Washington DC? If it is solely a company issue, what role might employee
relations or CSR initiatives play?
For your submission, create an organize outline that clearly indicates each step/aspect of the ROPES model in the way that you propose to address this issue
or opportunity.
Because you have the freedom to choose your own company/organization that will be experiencing unique circumstances, there is not exact page
requirement. Instead, just be sure that you are incorporating ever aspect of the ROPES model, clearly labeled, within your outline. Provide ample detail within
each section of the process to clearly indicate your proposed plan of action.
The ultimate goal with this assignment is to ensure that you are successful in your ability to understand and apply the ROPES model to a real-world situation.
