INTRODUCTION
Literature Review
The simplest task the visual system must perform is to differentiate light from dark. And since different objects in the environment reflect different amounts
of light to the eye, the visual system must assign different brightness values (the perceptual correlates of light intensities) to different objects in the visual
scene. The visual system begins by separating objects from their surrounding by looking for and identifying edges. Lateral inhibition in the retina aids edge
detection by accentuating brightness differences along object boundaries. But, there is only so much help that lateral inhibition can provide. The minimum
amount of intensity required to see an edge and see an object defined only by brightness would be a brightness Just Noticeable Difference, or JND.
Measuring this JND would require a brightness discrimination task.
Present Study.
Hypothesis 1: Thresholds will be significantly lower (better) for larger stimuli
Hypothesis 2: Threshold will be significantly lower (better) in central retina.
