Critical Analysis Project: Rape/Sexual Abuse on Campus
The Critical Analysis Project incorporates the students academic and intellectual work on a specific topic throughout the course.
The project will be turned in in 4 sections according to the due dates listed on the syllabus.
Each student will select some aspect of “Critical Victimology.” Your aim is to explore the wider social context in which some
versions of “victims” or victimology receive more attention than others, including policy responses and service delivery.
Students may pick a topic of their choice, so long as it relates to the course material. You should use a critical lens exploring the
topic and engage in analysis, not simply report on the topic. You should pay specific attention to the impact of race, gender,
economic status, disabilities, age and other social categories and their intersections. Each paper must be typed paper, single
spaced using in text citation (where appropriate). Students may be asked to discuss sections with the class. In order for this
assignment to be considered Complete student must use appropriate citation (APA or Chicago Style) and a minimum of 3
scholarly sources. Please check Syllabus Schedule for the Due Dates.
Below are the sections of the project
1)Literature review and data exploration (500-650 words): Starting early on, each student should choose a topic and begin
conducting a literature review related to the subject. Often there is limited or contradictory research, so students should begin
to research the topic using empirical/scholarly sources and reflecting on the research with a critical eye. The goal of this section
is to develop the students’ knowledge as it relates to the chosen topic as it relates to victims
2)Field Work: interviews and/or observation (500-650 words): The second section of the project, will include students getting
first hand knowledge from a variety of sources about the subject. Students can interview individuals who have experienced the
victimization (please keep this data confidential and anonymous, and be sure to fully disclose to the victim what you are doing
with the information). as well as service providers, members of the criminal justice community (ie law enforcement,
prosecutor) or others who would have relevant information regarding the issue. You may also participate in or observe
community meetings or court hearings related to the issue (SAFETY OF STUDENTS AND OTHERS ARE PARAMOUNT IN THIS
SECTION. PLEASE USE GOOD SAFETY PRACTICES WHEN ENGAGING IN DATA COLLECTION FOR THIS SECTION AND ABIDE BY ALL
REQUIRED PUBLIC HEALTH ORDERS-email interviews and virtual attendance are sufficient for this section))
3)Critical Review and Recommendations (500-650 words): The third section will be the students critical review of the issue. This
section will require the student to use the information gathered for purposes of this project, in addition to class discussions and
readings to fully think about and analyze the issue to make recommendations. This critical review and recommendations
should not simply be what the book, the victim, a service provider has recommended, but should be a combination of the
students own knowledge, critical analysis and the above sources.
4)Written Summary (250-300 words) & Presentation: The last section will be a written summary of all of the previous
components and a presentation on the most relevant information the student learned about the topic throughout the course.
Each student will summarize their own research, field work and recommendations in written format and create a presentation
to the class.
