Assignment Brief
MEN 503 Phase Test
Pass Mark 40%
Overall Weighting 30%
LEARNING OUTCOMES
On successful completion of this assignment, students should be able to
Have knowledge to demonstrate the practical use of GANTT charts / CPA / Network diagrams.
Understand the processes involved to plan and execute the required task
Recognise the potential pit falls and weaknesses in a project but also to identify where time and cost saving could be made.
Real-World Skills
1. Plan how to re-fit / replace machinery to a laid down specification.
2. Communicate information, data and ideas effectively in writing, and with the use of GANTT charts and understanding Critical Path Analysis (CPA)
Scenario
• The Warsash Maritime School has decided to fit a new 3 phase open diesel generator set in the Engineering workshop.
• It is to be ready for use in a 20 “working day” window (4weeks)
• You have been identified as the project manager for this task and will oversee the various stages
• It is a second-hand unit which currently sits with a reputable supplier but is unproven at this stage.
• They have engineers / electricians who are conversant with this type of installation. They do not have a craneage or transport.
• The area for location at WMS has been cleared but no preparation made.
• The Unit is a single set so will move as one single component
• Gen set to be used: https://www.adeltd.co.uk/diesel-generators/generator-pdf/CumminsPDF/C1000D5DataSheet.pdf
Assignment
The assignment is in 3 parts
1. Identify and list the tasks you consider appropriate to complete the process of installing this engine as per the scenario. Put into words the justification behind your thoughts for each task. These tasks need to be the data you input to the GANTT chart or CPA. Produce a programme to cover the “what am I going to do”, “how am I going to achieve” and “how do I measure success”. At this stage you should consider including real world timing and staffing levels. This will lead to step 2, Production of a simple Gant chart
2. Production of a simple GANT / CPA chart. This can be by hand or as an excel / word spread sheet (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDetfOCCMQo)
3. Reflection as to identify the potential pitfalls and any contingencies you may have available within your controls
Advice: Think about the process in 3 parts: factory, moving and installation/handover.
There is no need to provide “detailed specification of testing or installation processes”, the focus is to identify the processes which you, as an engineer / ETO, would expect to take place prior, and post installation.
General headings such as inspection / testing / trialling etc will suffice.
Project Plan. You may choose either role as the project manager. Mechanical Engineers you can treat this as an engine, whilst ETOs can treat it as a Generator
Electro-technical officers
• Generator is fit for purpose?
• What you may require to be carried out before Generator leaves factory
• Moving to site and site preparations
• Installations / checking
• Handover
Marine Engineers considerations
• Engine is fit for purpose?
• What you may require to be carried out before Engine leaves factory
• Moving to site and site preparations
• Installations / checking
• Handover
Reflection
At the end of the report the student should reflect on the process. Identify areas where time or cost savings could be made. Areas of weakness in the process which may require extra overseeing and highlight 3, (three) milestone points where payments could be made.
Report and reflection should be approximately 1000 words long. (Wording is counted for Identifying the task list and considerations listed and the reflection)
Referencing is to be in accordance with the Harvard referencing method.
