Informative Speech Outline: Psychological Disorder:Cause and Impact
Purpose statement: To inform my audience about the cause and impact of psychological
disorders.
INTRODUCTION: Do you know or understand what a psychological disorder is? Do you know
when psychological disorders strike, they can turn lives upside down? Today I will share with
you what psychological disorder is, the cause and impact along a few types of psychological
disorder.
Main point: Psychological disorder also commonly known as a mental illness which is a wide
range of conditions that affects a person’s feeling or mood. It may not only affect a person’s
emotions but also their thoughts and physical functioning.
TRANSITION:
o There are many types of mental illness disorders such as developmental disorder, anxiety
disorder, bipolar disorder, eating disorder, and many other mental illnesses.
o Today I will share with you the cause of some mental illnesses as well as the impact.
TRANSITION:
o One of the most common mental illnesses is an anxiety disorder which is characterized
by feelings of worry, fear, and nervousness that are strong enough to interfere with one’s
daily life activities.
● As mentioned in the Anxiety and Phobia Workbook (Sixth Edition)
by Edmund J. Bourne, PhD. page 5-29 says that there are several
types of anxiety disorders such as a panic attack, generalized

anxiety disorder (GAD), several types of phobia disorder, and
many others.
● Anxiety disorder is caused by many different reasons such as
heredity, work stress, financial problem, you can find more of the
causes in the Anxiety and Phobia Workbook as well.
● Anxiety Disorder can trigger your flight or fight stress response
and release a flood of hormones into your system which increases
your pluses and breathing rate.
TRANSITION:
o Another most common mental illness is Bipolar Disorder which is also known as
manic depression that can cause extreme mood swings which include emotions or
hopelessness that cause you to lose interest and pleasure in activities.
● In an interview with a Speech Therapy from St. Mary Hospital Simone
Harris on Friday, October 15, 2021, says that doctors are still unsure what
the causes of bipolar disorder is but still they suggest it’s a combination of
factors such as stressful life events, childhood trauma, genetics, and brain
chemistry.
● They increase energy, excitement, impulsive behavior, and
agitation.
● It’s difficult for them to build relationships with others and it’s difficult for
friends, families, and significant others to talk care of their loved ones
with bipolar disorder which can take a toll on their lives as well.

o Untreated Mental illness can lead to severe emotional, behavioral, and physical
health problems which can cause self-harm such as suicide and homicide, social
isolation, and a decrease in enjoyment of life.
o Going to therapy as well as support groups can be beneficial for someone
suffering from any mental illness.
● Therapy or Psychiatric can help someone discuss things they are feeling in
a safe environment.
● Support groups are also great for someone who is suffering from
mental illness to not feel alone and be able to talk freely without
feeling a sense of judgmental. It’s nice to talk to others who are
going through the same things you are going through.
CONCLUSION: Mental illness needs more sunlight and more unashamed conversation. During
my research on Psychological Disorder/ Mental illness, I have learned so much and makes me
want to help those who are suffering from mental illness. I would like for you all to be kind,
show love, help, and have patience with someone who is suffering from any mental illness.
