Assessment 3A: Written Paper on Debate Topic

 

1.    Team debates

During tutorial in weeks 11-12, teams of two (or three depending upon the tutorial size), will debate one another on any of the issues listed below. One team will take the affirmative (pro) side of the debate while the other team will take the negative (con) side. The class will judge which side has won the debate.

 

Prior to the oral debates, each student is required to submit a 1000-word research paper (plus or minus 10%) that presents an argument supporting their position on the issue.

 

Debate topic: The part highlighted in yellow is the side I am arguing.

The tutor will give each team some material to help them begin to understand the issue but more research is required.

 

Topic: “Civic or public journalism is an unhealthy trend for the media.”

 

The written paper should be 1200 words (plus or minus 10%). The word count does not include title page, reference list, appendices.

 

The paper should take the following format:

 

·      Title page (title, abstract, keywords)

·      Introduction

·      Background to the issue

·      Argument 1

·      Argument 2

·      Argument 3

·      … etc.

·      Conclusion

·      References
