1. Problem Statement.
Caffeine is one of the highly geographically distributed and consumed stimulant in the world. It is ingested in several forms such as tea and energy drinks. People have often reported that caffeine increases endurance and concentration and this has contributed to the high number of reported intakes. Despite the many advantages that come with consuming caffeine, there could be some negative side effects that people could experience, for example, sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation could pose as a big problem since it causes decrements in an individual’s cognitive functions (O’Callaghan, Muurlink & Reid). A person who has been deprived of sleep is most likely to experience lapses in attention and alertness, reduced ethical behavior, and decreased creativity. Such factors could lead to reduced productivity in an organization. An individual’s social life may also be affected if they are experiencing sleep deprivation. For example, he/she may experience increased emotional reactivity and may sometimes fail to recognize emotions such as facial expressions. The long-term effects of caffeine, therefore, are not only felt by an individual but rather through their entire social structure. This study aims to find out the effect of caffeine consumption on the ability to sleep.
